In May 2011, the SGV Foundation fulfilled its commitment to help build 88 homes at the Gawad Kalinga (GK) Village 88. But its desire to help the community did not end there. While working for the community’s sustainable development, it was determined that additional support was needed for the community in Camarin, Caloocan to thrive and grow.

Health is one area of development identified by GK. Gawad Kalusugan (GKal), the health program that GK is promoting, was established to enable people from the GK community to develop their own system, through the efforts of Gawad Kalinga volunteers who monitor and care for the health of their respective communities.
From November 21 to November 31, 2011, a Health Workers’ Training Program was organized by SGV & Co.’s Jennifer Ticlao and Katrina Francisco to encourage GK communities members to volunteer for Gawad Kalusugan. 28 people were identified from three GK sites in Camarin, namely, Swiber GK Village, SGV GK Village and Trend Micro GK Village, as potential community health workers.

Volunteer doctors and nurses were invited to facilitate the training sessions. Health workers also received much-needed materials such as health kits, scrub suits, and medical equipment, thanks to donations from the SGV Foundation and SGV & Co. staff.

Trained and committed GK health service providers successfully emerged from the program. These new health workers will be able to assist in fulfilling the mission and vision of the GKal program to build healthy and empowered GK communities.

The Board of Trustees, management and Committees of the SGV Foundation held their annual meeting on 25 November, 2011 at the SGV Bayanihan Executive Lounge.

The meeting began with Chairman Cirilo P. Noel calling for a moment of silent prayer for former SGV Managing Partner Rizalino “Roy” S. Navarro who until his passing earlier this year was a member of the Board of Trustees of the SGV Foundation. In his honor, the Foundation turned over to his surviving spouse, Ms. Sally Navarro, donations to the Kapampangan Development Foundation and the Philippine Business for Education Foundation, organizations that the late Mr. Navarro supported.

The Board also welcomed SGV Partners Emmanuel C. Alcantara, and Gemilo J. San Pedro as new members, joining Cirilo P. Noel, J. Carlitos G. Cruz, Erlinda T. Villanueva, Roberto Jose L. Castillo, Roberto F. De Ocampo, Grace Glory Go, Milwida M. Guevara, Kasigod V. Jamias, Rodolfo F. Jeturian, Guillermo D. Luchangco, Wilson P. Tan, Oscar S. Reyes, and Serafin U. Salvador Jr.

The Projects Committee is headed by Chairman Cynthia A. Manlapig with members J. Carlitos G. Cruz as Chairman, Project Advisory Group on Accounting, Management, and Related Fields, Winston A. Chan as Chairman, Project Advisory Group on Information and Communication Technology, Wilson P. Tan as Chairman, Project Advisory Group on Institutional Development, Ramon D. Dizon as Chairman, Project Advisory Group on Vocational Training, and Celia S. Samson, Executive Director.

The Investment Committee is headed by Chairman Wilson P. Tan with members Erlinda T. Villanueva, Cynthia A. Manlapig and Virginia T. Obcena.

For FY 2011-2012, the Foundation will continue working to promote nation-building through various projects. Its primary advocacies will include: Education, through programs that aim to improve Basic and Public educational systems; Institutional Development through the Entrepreneur Of the Year (EOY) program, which will be enhanced by the EOY Academy, a venue that will allow EOY nominees and winners to share knowledge with budding entrepreneurs; and Social Development by continuing projects in support of Gawad Kalinga and the SGV Museum.

Vice-Chairman J. Carlitos G. Cruz also announced the launch of the Foundation’s official website, coinciding with the SGV Foundation’s 45th anniversary.

SGV & Co. and the SGV Foundation successfully held their first charity race called First Step – The SGV Run for Learning on November 6, 2011 at the SM Mall of Asia Complex. The stormy weather did not deter the SGV & Co. partners, staff, clients and friends who gamely ran the 3-, 5- or 10-kilometer routes for a great cause.
First Step raised funds to benefit the Aklat, Gabay, Aruga Tungo sa Pangarap at Pag-asa (AGAPP) Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that aims to improve the quality of basic public school education in the Philippines through the construction of better learning facilities. The turnout of some 2000 runners contributed greatly to the goal of building two classroom-libraries for public preschool children.

Celebrating 65 years of SyCip, Gorres, Velayo & Co. in the Philippines, the SGV Foundation together with the Ayala Foundation led the opening of the SGV Museum on June 28, 2011. SGV partners joined founder Mr. Washington SyCip to officially unveil the museum. The SGV Museum features a memorabilia room, a gallery of the Firm’s art collection, a reconstruction of Mr. SyCip’s early office complete with a collection of his prized owls, roosters and turtles, as well as an interactive timeline showing SGV’s rich heritage and legacy, its evolution since its establishment 65 years ago and its contributions to business, government and education sectors in the country.

SGV Foundation Chairman and President Vic Noel’s opening remarks encapsulated what the opening of the SGV Museum represents, “the SGV Museum is the Firm’s gift to the future, a means by which future SGV staff could learn not only how SGV began, but also what is stands for — integrity, quality and leadership.”
The launch was graced with guests which include Mr. Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, former US Ambassador Thomas Hubbard and Ambassador Roberto Romulo.

SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT

Sonia Segovia

Sonia grew up in Pulupundan, Negros Occidental with two siblings. Her father managed his own general store and, at the same time, operated two passenger jeepneys. Her mother worked as a government employee.

At a young age, she had already set her goals. Coming from a working class family, education was given the utmost priority. Sonia knew that to achieve her dreams for herself and her family, she had to work hard.

She was able to enter college at St. La Salle Bacolod in 1984. Sonia de la Torre, as she was known back then, pursued a Bachelor of Science in Commerce, with a major in Accounting. As she pursued her major, her dedication to her studies was recognized as she was chosen as one of SGV Foundation’s scholars for the SY 1986-1987 up to SY 1987-1988.

Graduating Cum Laude and placing 7th in the 1988 CPA board examinations, Sonia proved that learning to focus on your work and persevering will pay off.

Shortly, after the CPA board exams, she applied at SGV & Co. Since then, Sonia has become a partner in Tax and specializes in tax compliance, tax due diligence, modeling of tax impact under alternative structures, review of controls on tax-related processes and review of Deferred Income Tax. She completed the Management Development Program of the AIM and has earned units in Masters in Business Administration at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business. Now she is able to share what she has learned from her education and experience through lectures and through articles she has written.

Being an SGV Foundation scholar, Sonia did not only make her school proud, but as part of the SGV family, she has also made the SGV Foundation fulfill its mission of providing opportunities in education, aiming towards social development.

The search for the Entrepreneur Of The Year Philippines 2011 culminated with an awards banquet last 12 October at the Rizal Ballroom of Makati Shangri-la Hotel. The highly anticipated evening was welcomed by SGV & Co. Chairman and Managing partner, Vic Noel with a toast to the entrepreneurs. Following dinner was a performance by Asia’s premiere vocal harmony act, The CompanY. Opening the Awarding ceremonies was Chairman and President of Planters Development Bank and Entrepreneur of the Year Philippines 2009 Ambassador Jesus P. Tambunting.

The Entrepreneur Of The Year was founded in the United States by professional services firm Ernst & Young in 1986 to recognize the achievements of the most successful and innovative entrepreneurs worldwide. In 2001, Ernst & Young expanded the program and launched the World Entrepreneur Of The Year awards. In the Philippines, the SGV Foundation, Inc. established the Entrepreneur Of The Year in 2003.
