BENCH/ Chairman named Entrepreneur Of The Year Philippines

Ben Chan, Chairman of Suyen Corporation, the company behind the BENCH/ fashion line, was named the Entrepreneur of the Year Philippines 2013 at the awards banquet held on October 16 at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel. He will represent the country in the prestigious World Entrepreneur of the Year awards in Monte Carlo, Monaco in June 2014.

Mr. Chan was recognized for his creativity, love of design and perseverance, which he channeled into building a multi-billion peso corporation. He was also given the Master Entrepreneur award for applying sound management practices in critical areas of the company including finance, marketing, human resources and sales, allowing him to grow Suyen from a small local shop to an international organization with over 1,000 stores across the country, and outlets in China, the Middle East and the US.
The other category winners were Dr. Milagros O. How, Executive Vice President of Universal Harvester, Inc. (Woman Entrepreneur); Leonarda O. Capuyan, President of Narda’s Handwoven Arts and Crafts and Narda’s Trading Corp. (Small Business Entrepreneur); and Juliet D. Herrera, President and General Manager of Serenitea Cha Kitchen, Inc. (Young Entrepreneur).

The other finalists who were recognized for their inspirational stories were: Santiago G.Araneta (LBC Express, Inc.), Alexander L. Bangsoy (Goshen Land, Inc.), Ma. Lorena Simeon-Florendo (LiFEDATA Systems, Inc.), Alberto D. Lina (Airfreight 2100), Cesar Mario O. Mamon (Enchanted Kingdom, Inc.), Manuel H. Osmeña (Manny O Group), Dr. Victor V. Perez (University of Cagayan Valley), and Rajan A. Uttamchandani (Esquire Financing, Inc.)

In his opening remarks, SGV Chairman and Managing Partner and SGV Foundation Chairman and President Vic Noel said that the essence of entrepreneurship is the determination to break through the barriers to success.

Mark A. Weinberger, EY Global Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, spoke about how entrepreneurs are helping to build a better working world, saying “Entrepreneurs spur innovation. They bring about new products, services and technologies. They are the driving forces behind globalization.”

EOY Philippines celebrated its tenth year with the theme Breaking Barriers— a testament to the passion, drive and determination of all the entrepreneurs who have participated in the program over the last decade.
