SGV & Co. founder Washington SyCip believes that a professional services firm must assume a social esponsibility in a developing country. SyCip has often declared, A professional services company - and its people - must actively participate in the community in which it practices; it should be socially conscious and involved in efforts to improve the conditions of disadvantaged groups.

Two decades after its creation, SGV had become the leader among professional firms in the Philippines. On its 20th year in 1966, SyCip established the SGV Foundation, Inc. (SGVF), along with partners Alfredo Velayo, Cesar Virata, Benjamin Abela and Erlinda Villanueva.

In a bid to provide equal education opportunities to its manpower complement, the SGVF has granted scholarships to hundreds of professionals for studies in diverse fields including accounting, agricultural economics, business administration, computer science and entrepreneurship in various institutions across the country. Furthermore, the SGVF has financed hundreds of scholarships in vocational training and computer science education.

The Foundation has established professorial chairs in accounting, management, economics, computer science, entrepreneurial development, agribusiness, communication arts, child development, etc. in various universities nationwide. Under the SGVF Faculty Development Program teachers have availed of assistance in educational programs on industrial and management sciences, with the end-view of improving their teaching methods.

The emphasis on education is deliberate because the Foundation and its founders believe that this will fuel social and economic growth in the long run. SyCip has always maintained that the best kind of investment is an investment in people. He believes strongly than when a firm offers the best opportunities, it attracts the best graduates and, ultimately the best clients.

It is in this mold that SyCip established SGV. By setting up the SGV Foundation, he ensured that this tradition of excellence is sustained within and even beyond the realms of SGV. This is the legacy of the SGV Foundation.

The SGVF - through its humble ventures - hopes to contribute to a more equitable society. Although the Foundation has been successful in its projects, this is not, by any means, reason to rest on its laurels. There is still so much that can and needs to be done.
